Elite tourism 2026: invisible technology is the new luxury

Elite tourism has grown faster than the overall market and has changed in nature: today's high-spending guest is younger, more international and more demanding about invisible details. Here's what that means in practice for a high-end property.

Today, luxury is time, not gold

The premium guest isn't paying for the carpet: they're paying not to waste time. Check-in without a queue, the room ready at the promised time, a request fulfilled on the first attempt, a bill that's already correct at check-out. Every minute given back to the guest is worth more than any amenity.

Recognition: never ask twice

Preferred temperature, pillow type, newspaper, allergies, breakfast time: these are details the guest provides once and expects to find remembered on their next stay. This requires a CRM fed by digital touchpoints — including the in-room TV — and a clear policy on what is kept and for how long.

Invisible technology

In luxury, a cluttered interface is a flaw. The design rule is: a restrained opening screen, with the guest's name and no more than six choices; everything else reachable but not exposed. The property's brand must dominate, and the technology provider must be invisible — no third-party logo on screen.

Privacy as a premium service

The high-end guest is particularly sensitive about data handling. Full deletion of sessions and streaming accounts at check-out, no always-on microphone, accessible privacy information and the option to decline personalisation without losing the base service. Privacy, communicated well, becomes a positioning asset.

Multilingual support and cultural awareness

A guest from the Gulf, an American and a Japanese guest have different expectations about timing, food, formality and TV channels. A property that sets language, content and services according to the booking's nationality — automatically, from the PMS — communicates attentiveness without having to say a word.

Local services and exclusive experiences

In the high-end segment, what's really being sold isn't rooms but experiences: a private wine cellar, a boat, a chef in a villa, after-hours access to a museum. The in-room channel is the natural place to offer them, provided the offering is curated and limited: three excellent experiences convert better than thirty generic ones.

The risk of over-digitisation

Replacing human contact with a screen is a commercial mistake in luxury. Digital tools should absorb repetitive operations and free up staff for the relationship: technology handles the order, the human being handles the surprise.

Frequently asked questions

Do luxury guests really want technology in the room?+

They want the outcome, not the technology: immediate service, content in their own language, no waiting. If the screen is complicated, they'll prefer the phone — and that's a sign of poor design, not a rejection of digital tools.

How do you reconcile personalisation and privacy?+

By using little data, declared and reversible: preferences provided by the guest, not inferred; limited retention; automatic deletion of sessions at check-out; the option to switch off personalisation.

How much does the brand on screen matter?+

A great deal. In luxury, the interface must use the property's own fonts, colours and tone of voice. A standard interface with the vendor's logo prominent weakens the perception of exclusivity.

Which digital services does this segment value most?+

Check-out without going to the till, concierge requests without phoning, content and apps from their own streaming platform, control over climate and lighting, and booking of curated experiences.

Is it worth investing for a small property?+

Yes, provided it's scaled appropriately: in a boutique hotel with few rooms the investment is modest and the impact on the perception of attentiveness is immediate, because every detail is more visible.
