Digital housekeeping: how the in-room TV cuts wasted trips to the floors

Housekeeping is the department with the highest number of micro-inefficiencies and the lowest level of digitisation. The in-room TV, connected to the PMS and to floor staff's tools, is the simplest channel for closing the loop.

Electronic Do Not Disturb

The guest activates DND from the remote control: the status appears instantly on the housekeeper's list and, where present, on the door indicator. No tag to hang, no wasted trip. The status resets automatically at check-out.

Cleaning and turndown requests

The reverse flow is just as useful: the guest can request cleaning now, later, or at a specific time. The assignment enters the floor queue with priority and the desired time, and the housekeeper rebuilds the round based on real requests rather than a fixed schedule.

Linen, towels and sustainability

An explicit request to change the linen replaces the sign on the bed and produces measurable data. Properties that communicate the environmental savings achieved (litres of water, kWh, detergent) directly on the TV see high uptake of reuse: it's a sustainability lever the guest perceives as their own choice, not as a cut in service.

Extra requests and amenities

An extra pillow, a cot, a bathroom kit, a hairdryer, slippers: minor requests take up an enormous share of front desk time. Turning them into selectable items on the TV, routed to the correct department with visible progress status, removes the phone call and cuts response time.

Maintenance: the report that starts in the room

A dripping tap or a noisy air conditioner reported from the TV generates a maintenance ticket with room number, category and description. The benefit isn't just speed: it's that the fault is reported during the stay rather than in the review after departure.

Integration with PMS room status

Maximum value comes when room status is shared: dirty, clean, inspected, occupied, departing. The TV shows the guest what they need, the housekeeper works from an up-to-date list, and the front desk sees in real time which rooms are ready for early check-in — one of the most frequent and hardest requests to satisfy.

Frequently asked questions

Does Do Not Disturb from the TV replace the door tag?+

In properties with an electronic door indicator, yes. Where there is no indicator, the status is still visible to the housekeeper on the floor device, which is already enough to avoid the wasted trip.

Is a dedicated housekeeping software needed?+

If the PMS already manages room status, integrating that is often enough. A dedicated module is worthwhile above a certain size, or when tracking time and productivity per staff member is a goal.

How do you stop guests abusing extra requests?+

With a catalogue defined by the property, maximum quantities and, where appropriate, a stated cost. Transparency about limits reduces inappropriate requests better than any filter.

What concrete operational benefits does it bring?+

The main ones are fewer wasted trips to the floors, fewer front-desk calls for minor requests, and faster reporting of faults, with a direct impact on reviews.

Does it also work for seasonal properties?+

Yes, and it's particularly useful: in seasons with new staff, a guided digital flow reduces training time and communication errors between departments.
