Is your hotel's network ready for IPTV? Requirements, audit and checklist

A dedicated VLAN for the TV service
IPTV traffic must be isolated from guest and administrative traffic. A dedicated VLAN stops a download spike on the guest Wi-Fi from degrading in-room viewing, and it reduces the attack surface. It's requirement number one, and it applies even to small properties.
Multicast and IGMP snooping
Live channels are distributed via multicast: without IGMP snooping enabled on the switches, the stream is sent to every port and saturates the network. Check that the switches are managed, that the IGMP querier is configured, and that IGMP versions are consistent across all devices.
Bandwidth per room
Budget 8–12 Mbps guaranteed per room for HD channels, 20–25 Mbps if 4K is planned. The link between floor cabinets and the core needs at least 1 Gbps, ideally 10 Gbps in properties above 150 rooms or with heavy VOD use.
Power and cabling
Every room needs a Cat5e/Cat6 network point behind the TV. Where this doesn't exist, solutions running over existing coaxial cable (MoCA/G.hn) should be evaluated before re-cabling: they save weeks of building work and disruption to guests. Prefer PoE power where available, to reduce the number of power adapters in the room.
Wi-Fi and casting
Casting from a smartphone requires the guest's device and the TV to see each other in a controlled way. The correct solution is per-room isolation with temporary pairing, not a flat network: this stops a guest casting to a neighbour's TV.
Site survey checklist
1) An up-to-date network diagram. 2) Switch make and model, with firmware version. 3) Presence of VLANs and multicast capability. 4) Available network points in the room. 5) Incoming internet bandwidth and SLA. 6) Rack space and location for the headend and VOD server. 7) Power continuity (UPS). 8) Wi-Fi coverage per floor. With these eight points, the system can be sized without surprises.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to re-cable the hotel for IPTV?+
Not necessarily. Where coaxial cable already runs to the rooms, technologies such as MoCA or G.hn can be used to carry the IP network without building work.
How much internet bandwidth is needed?+
Live channels and VOD are distributed locally, so the hotel's internet bandwidth matters relatively little. What matters is internal bandwidth: 8–12 Mbps guaranteed per room in HD.
Are unmanaged switches good enough?+
No, not for multicast live channels. Without IGMP snooping, traffic is replicated to every port and the network saturates quickly.
How long does a network audit take?+
For a property with up to 150 rooms, a half-day site survey is generally enough to produce the requirements document and action plan.
