When writing a specification for an IPTV system, the risk is asking for everything and using 20% of it. This is the complete map of functions available today, organised by family and with a priority indication.

1. Entertainment

National and international IPTV and satellite channels, radio, cinema VOD with an up-to-date catalogue, native Android TV apps (the main streaming platforms), games, music, smartphone mirroring via AirPlay and Chromecast with per-room isolation. For international guests, having channels in their native language is among the top three factors of TV satisfaction.

2. Information and welcome

A personalised welcome message with the guest's name, a service directory, opening hours, a property map, weather, flights, local events, safety information, house rules, and the property's own internal channel. All multilingual and updatable from the back office without technical intervention.

3. Services and revenue

Room service and F&B menu, minibar, spa and restaurant booking, excursions and experiences, transfers, late check-out, room upgrades, e-commerce for local products, room charge and payment, promotional banners targeted by segment.

4. Operations and self-service

Check-out from the TV with bill summary, Do Not Disturb, cleaning and linen requests, amenity requests, maintenance reporting, wake-up call, pre-departure satisfaction survey — the latter being the function with the best ratio between cost and impact on online reputation.

5. Integration

PMS (Opera, Protel, Mews, Fidelio and other market leaders) for guest profile, room status, postings and check-out; POS and F&B management system; spa systems; door lock; in-room automation (lights, climate, curtains); Wi-Fi captive portal; CRM and reputation platforms. Every integration should be assessed on operational return, not on show-off effect.

6. Management and control

Multi-property back office, content and price-list management, scheduling, device status monitoring, remote updates, roles and permissions by department, usage and revenue statistics, audit logging. In a hotel group this is the part that determines the real cost of management.

Digital signage and common areas

The same functions extend beyond the room: screens in the lobby, lifts, meeting rooms, restaurant and spa managed from the same back office, with different schedules by location and time slot. This avoids buying two separate systems and two maintenance contracts.

How to choose: the three-block rule

Block 1 (day zero): channels, VOD, apps, welcome, directory, multilingual support. Block 2 (within 90 days): room service, housekeeping requests, satisfaction survey, basic PMS integration. Block 3 (when the data justifies it): e-commerce, predictive upselling, room automation, extended digital signage, AI. Switching everything on at once is the surest way to end up using none of it.

Frequently asked questions

Which functions are truly essential?+

Working channels and VOD, a multilingual interface, a personalised welcome, an updatable service directory and at least one channel for sending requests to departments. Everything else is incremental.

Can functions be added after installation?+

Yes, with a software platform like Quadro Entertainment, functions are activated from the back office without replacing the in-room hardware. This is the main criterion for evaluating a vendor.

Are the functions the same for hotels and cruise ships?+

The core is identical, but on board you need fully offline operation, management of onboard languages, itinerary and safety information, and content synchronisation in port.

How do you measure whether a function is actually used?+

From the back office: sessions per function, active rooms, conversions and revenue generated. Functions with usage below a useful threshold should be repositioned in the interface or removed, not left there.

Are the functions available in all languages?+

The interface is. The property's own content needs to be translated: modern platforms offer assisted translation with human review for allergens, safety and prices.
